Rapport från Världsfackets kongress

Anförande i plenum 
I egenskap av ungdomsorganisation fick Saco studentråd möjlighet att hålla ett anförande i plenum. Albert valde att lyfta klimatet som en facklig fråga och hur det slår an till utbildning. Ett talmanus från anförandet går att hitta längst ner på den här sidan. 

Möte med ungdomskommittén 
Under fredagen hölls ett möte med Världsfackets ungdomskommitté. Dels diskuterades ungdomsfacklig organisering och hur ungdomar kan nås och förstå värdet av ett fackligt medlemskap. Även val till ungdomskommittén presidium bereddes under mötet.  

Möte med Ukrainas ungdomsfackliga ordförande 
Under måndagen träffade Saco studentråd Ukrainas ungdomsfackliga ordförande Ivanna Khrapko i ett samtal om gemensamma utmaningar kring att nå unga fackliga trots väldigt olika förutsättningar. Kontakt för vidare samarbete upprättades också. 

Klimatfackligt arbete 
Ett stort fokus för kongressen var klimatet som en facklig fråga generellt. Samtliga svenska centralorganisationer valde att lyfta klimatsatsningar i plenum. Vid sidan av kongressen pågick också flera seminarier med temat klimatomställning. Särskilt spännande var perspektiven från länder, som Indien och Sydafrika, där klimatförändringar redan har inneburit väldigt konkreta förändringar för förutsättningarna för arbete. Exempel var att extremvärme ledde till kortare arbetstid eller att översvämningar leder till lerskred.

Saco studentråds anförande  
Dear congress, 

As the chairman of the student wing of the Swedish Confederation of Professional Associations it is with great joy I see how the Draft Statement acknowledges Climate Change as a trade union responsibility as well as a job-creator for a skilled and educated workforce. Students in Sweden and across the globe look to our trade unions as key actors in the fight for climate action and a Just Transition. When politicians and industries fail to deliver, our organisations have a unique opportunity in moving the goalpost and driving through real change.  

In the past, some of our organisations may have declared that the global responsibilities of trade unions do not extend further than the social and economic sustainability of the Paris Agreement. However, to secure fair work on this planet in the future, climate action is key. Only through recognising that climate action through Just Transition promotes our joint goals of fairer and more equitable societies are we able to continue our work in the future. Only through active action to promote the Just Transition can our organisations stay relevant to a new generation of workers in all types of work. And only through necessary investments in relevant skills and accessible education are we able to secure that our members are equipped to tackle climate change and overcome the climate emergency facing our globe. Education has to be the foundation for the next generation of green jobs.  

Assembly, our organisations are the voice of the workers as we promote climate action through Just Transition. Everyday, our organisations strive towards better working conditions for our members. Climate Action through Just Transition constitutes a pillar, not a hindrance, in our continued strife. 

Now, written words are naturally different from actual action and there is a lot more work to be done. However, if there are any organisations that can convert words into action, it is our organisations. The trade union movement can turn “blahblahblah” into actual lasting change, to paraphrase a famous Swedish climate activist. 

Therefore, as a representative for students of Sweden – the workforce of the future – the climate writings of the Draft Statement gives me increased hope for that very future.
